Why Does My Resume Keep Getting Rejected

Why Does My Resume Keep Getting Rejected Why Does My Resume Keep Getting Rejected AtResumeSpice, weve seen a lot of resumes and counseled a lot of job seekers. One of the biggest issues our clients face is that theyre submitting resumes, but theyre just not getting any calls. Here are a few common reasons why that happens1. Youre Not Following DirectionsThis has less to do with your resume and more to do with your reading comprehension. Make sure you read through the entire job description. Sometimes, employers put instructions on how to apply at the very bottom of the description. They do that so they can automatically eliminate anyone who doesnt follow directions. If the employer asks for you to submit a resume in .pdf format along with a list of references and writing samples to a certain email address with a specific subject line, theyre testing you. Make sure you pass the test by following the directions exactly.2. Your Resume HasTypos and Improper GrammarWe know that mistakes happen. But when the only information an employer has about you is your resume, you want to make sure its working for you, not against you.Read your resume aloud, have a trusted friend who is excellent with grammar and spelling proof it, or hire a professional resume writing service to create it for you.No matter which avenue you take to ensure your resume is telling the right story, dont pass proofreading over. An extra ten minutes to reread your resume could be the difference between getting a call and not.3. Youre Overusing Quick Apply FeaturesQuick apply can be abreath of fresh air if youre used tosubmitting applications that take 45 minutes to complete. However, you might not be getting a call because youre jumping the gun.Make sure you truly match the job requirements before hitting apply. If you only read one or two bullet points before applying, you might be overlooking a crucial requirement further down.4. Youre OverqualifiedThis has become a clichd excuse that job seekers have grown tired of hearing, but it is a legitimate reason why you might get passed over.If youve been in a higher position or have a lot more experience than the job requires, a great way to explain why youre seeking this specific opportunity is to include a titelseite letter. Maybe youre at a place in your career where you want to change pace, or maybe you want to learn a different skill set altogether. Address it in a cover letter so that you wont be automatically dismissed as too experienced.Savannah Ober is a resume expert atResumeSpice.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. The USAJOBS Self-Assessment Questionnaire is a Test. Did you get 90 or above

The USAJOBS Self-Assessment Questionnaire is a Test. Did you get 90 or aboveThe USAJOBS Self-Assessment Questionnaire is a Test. Did you get 90 or aboveThe USAJOBS Self-Assessment Questionnaire is a Test. Did you get 90 or above?Industrial Organization Psychologists are busy creating employment tests for jobseekers, to try to get the jobseeker to deflate their answers, leave out important information and otherwise help the HR specialists eliminate them from the application list. Its true. There are SO many jobseekers that the automated application for jobs has become more difficult, specific and regimented than ever. In the old days (5 years ago) a person could send in a resume and cover letter in an envelope or attached to an email. Now most large companies require a total automated application process, so that they can manage the resumes, applicants qualifications and documents the best possible. For instance, at an I/O conference IPAC Conference I attended in July, I learned that big corporation Sprint receives approximately 2,000 applications for each position they post. Sprint has a total automated application process. John Smith, who is the IO Psychologist at Sprint, told me that the applicant must complete the online application, rather than attaching a resume. In fact he said, we dont read resumes or cover letters. The application must be online, or they are screened out immediately. The USAJOBS application system is totally automated. One of the important tips that I learned from the Sprint executive, it that it is better to copy and paste the resume into the resume-builder, or application online, rather than uploading the resume. The HR specialists do bedrngnis like to see very resume looking different and creative. They want the information organized where they can find it fast. This is for your sake, believe me.The Self-Assessment QuestionnaireAdditionally, most large organizations are using a self-assessment questionnaire as a screening tool to dete rmine if you have the minimum qualifications for the job. This assessment test is designed to ask you specific questions about your skills. It is multiple choice. It is important that you give yourself all the credit that you can. The Self-assessment questionnaire support the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) required for the position. The number of questions can range for 10 to 80, depending on the HR specialist who is managing the recruitment. The HR specialists and I/O Psychologists will try to scare you and even persuade you to be less flattering than you should be. The use of certain threat statements that will state that if you over-exagerate your answers, you could be fired, imprisoned or other bad things could happen, if you inflate your scores. The resume must match the questionnaire. The HR specialist does have the authority to throw you out of consideration if the resume does bedrngnis match the questionnaire.Lets say Sprint or USAJOBS receives a total of 2,000 applic ations. Maybe one-third will do something wrong with the online application, including uploading the resume and answering the questionnaire with questions below a score of 70 or not uploading documents. The next one-third will have poor resumes. The next one-third will be reviewed for consideration of Best Qualified for the position. The questionnaire is a critical for first cut for a federal application and many large corporate automated applications. Recently, Vincent applied for an EEO Specialist position with a federal agency. His questionnaire had 23 questions. The highest level of the multiple choice question was E. The lowest was A. He answered 12 of the questions as E. 5 of the questions as C. 4 of the questions as A (I have no experience of education in this area). And several of the Yes No questions were answered as NO, which is the wrong answer. On the day after the closing date at around 1215 pm, Vincent received an automated email saying that his questionnaire resulted in a score below the minimum level and he was not eligible for the position. Vincent wrote to me and sent me that email. I went into his questionnaire an looked at his answers. I was shocked because he was more qualified that he scored himself based on his resume and years of experience. I do not know why he deflated his scores so badly. His score was below 70 (out of a total of 100) because he was found automatically ineligible for the position. He really was qualified for the position. The self-assessment (or self-report) questionnaire is now an integral parte of applications for large organizations. This is your own statement of your skills as it relates to your background and your resume. When you find an announcement that seems very good for your background, find the questionnaire quickly and answer the questions. If you can score your skill level high, this would be a good position for you to submit. If you cannot score the application highest level in most questions, you wil l not receive a score high enough for the resume to be reviewed which is a score of 90.Most every application in government has some kind of assessment questionnaire. The applicationmanager.gov system manages the questionnaire portion of the USAJOBS applications. This is a 2nd part to a two-part application system for federal positions. The 3rd part of the application which is also important is the upload of documents which prove your status or information about certain preference you may have for federal positions.Final wordsReview the questionnaires carefully and give yourself the most credit that you can in answering the questionnaires. Also make sure that the resume matches the questionnaire and KSAs form the vacancy announcement. And maybe you will get Best Qualified and Referred to a supervisor for a federal position.

I quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks  You should too

I quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks You should tooI quit mindless morning scrolling for two weeks You should tooMy dream morning routine goes like this wake up naturally with the sun, enjoy warm water with lemon or a cup of coffee withcollagenwhile I meditate for 20 blissful minutes, go through a ten-step skincare routine (K-Beauty style) and gleefully head off to a workout or a walk outside, all before its even time to get ready for the workday ahead (aka 730am). Sounds lovely, doesnt it?Heres how my morning routine actually goes alarm goes off, and I groggily think about how Apple shouldoffer less angryalarmtones (butall of the 20+ alarms sound angry to me when its 624(precisely)). I turn it off, do the math on how much longer I can possibly stay in bed for (I dont reallyneedto put on mascara today), and sift through Instagram for much longer than even my own schwimmbad math allows for. When its anywhere from 4-10 minutestoolate, I finally get out of bed, brush my teeth , slather on some serum and moisturizer, and either run off to a workout class or leave for work, always a little bit late.Yes, mornings are hard, and sleeping in is tempting, but I was waking up with mora than enough time to achieve my dream morning routine (okay, elend as gleefully and naturally as I envisioned, but still),or at least to just be on time. So whats the problem? Well, I stay in bed for 20-30 minutes every morningon my phone. That might seem like not that big of a deal, but I did the math (this is more math than Ive done since high school calculus) - even just being onmy phone for 30 minutes every day is210 minutes in a week. Thats 10,920 minutes in a year.Thats right, I was wasting 182 hurs a year that I couldve spent doing something that made me feel productive or happy. Not to mention all the other times in the day I sit around on my phone (aka the nights I get to bed45 minutes late because I was watching food videos on Facebook). I no longer wanted to waste time, I no longer wanted to always be rushed and late, and I no longer wanted to always resort to my phone out of laziness. What I didFor two weeks, I was going to commit to not looking at my phoneat all, until at least an hour after I woke up, and at least an hour before I wanted to go to bed.also vowed to be more mindful in general about my phone usage, and would only go on Instagram to see my notifications and check on the few favorite accounts that I feel genuinely inspire me (theeverygirl_, duh). Even those quick checks would be limited to a few times a day (no mindless scrolling).Full disclosure, the only exception to these rules would be calling my boyfriend before bed(LDRers, you get me), but absolutely no snapchatting, Facebook messaging, or Insta scrolling. Not only did I succeed in my two weeks, but Im still keeping up the habit.Heres how it changed my lifeIm not so rushed.Sure, in the big game of life, 30 minutes is practically nothing. But 30 minutes before a long day of work? Thatseverything. I can make sure I give enough time to my skincare, makeup, hair, and outfit as I need to feel comfortable throughout the entire day and make sure I have everything I need before I leave the house. This saves me more stress than you can possibly realize unless you know how many times I get to the end of the driveway and realize I forgot my wallet. But its notjustmorning routines that this challenge streamlined - I didnt have to be rushed any time during the day, at all. With my extra time in the morning, I could schedule out my day and lay out or prepare something I may need laterlike mylunch or workout clothes foreveningexercise. I was not late foranything.Im healthier. When I wasnt starting my day with sitting around on my phone, I had the time to at least take a 20 minute walk if not a full on workout (thank you, Youtube). Getting my body moving first thing in the morning made a huge difference on the energy I felt throughout the day, and kept me motivated to make healthy decisions, well into dinner time. I also had the time to make a delicious and nutritious breakfast (I evenmade yummy avocado toast one morninginstead taking a smoothie on the road - phone, who?).Im more confident.Im the first personto claim that Iactually use social media for good - honest Instagram helps me find and spread inspiration, harness mystyle and creativity, and learn about womans careers who I admire and would like to learn from. I dont think I easily compare myself to others, but, lets be honest, whenever anyone is bombarded by pictures of people living their best life (aka a flawless, edited, version of their life without any of the inevitable bad stuff), it starts to shift their mind frame. Instead of starting my day by looking at (unrealistically beautiful) people traveling to amazing places, having amazing clothes, and living amazing lives, I focus on only myself and how amazingmylife is. I take time to read a little bit from self-improvement books or do s omething that I know makes me happy like doing a quick joga session or cooking breakfast. Which brings me toIm happier.Obviously, all of these factors make anyonehappier. Being more confident, healthy, andless rushed sounds like a damn happy life, doesnt it? But beyond just filling the time with activities that make me happier, not checking my phone in the early morning or late at night has psychological benefits that are scientifically proven to change your psychology. For one, screen timegives us a constant subconscious feeling of FOMO. If the first thing we do in the morning is check notifications on our phone, it sets up the mind frame for the day of focusing on all the things we missed since yesterday. Subconsciously, this makes us already feel disconnected and behind.Checking your phone in the morning will also make it harder for you to focus throughout the rest of the day - seriously. Julie Morgenstern, author ofNever Check Email in the Morning, says its hardgo from usingyour frontal cortex to the other parts of your brain where strategy and relationships happen. Thats just science-y talk for, your mind goes all over the place when you look at Instagram, check emails, or text, right when you wake up, and your brain cant adjust as well into a focused state for the rest of the day. Not being able to focusand not being mindful causes stress, and you know whatstress causes? Unhappiness. The world knowshow harmful it is to stare at a screen before bed the blue lighttells your body its supposed to be awake, so its harder to get into a deeper sleep cycle (and getting enough sleep is crucial tofeeling healthy and happy). If you need another reason, your mind cant relax ifits keeping up with Instagram storiesand group texts, and thatcan causesanxiety. What if thosehorrible nightmares or tossing and turning over your next day to-do listis all because social media scrolling before bed left your mind unable to relax? Theres a very good (scientific) possibility that t hats exactly the reason. Now, I realize that for many people, they could not even imagine wasting as much time on their phones as I hadbeen (damn kids, these days), and this article about not looking at your phone for two designated hours of the day is not a life hack, it may just be, well, life. But for us millennials, a phone is like second skin. Its what we use to communicate, count our steps, wake us up in the morning, and put us to bed at night (thank you, Headspace app). While there are thousands of genius apps that canmake you happier and healthier, we need space from our phones in order to be as happy and healthy as we can be.We should be usingour phones only to add quality to our life rather than excessive scrolling, and we should not feel dependent on the little screens in our back pockets. A semi-digital detox totally changed my life and it might for you, too.(And I swear, I only checked Instagram once while writing this)This article was originally posted on TheEverygirl.c om.
